Siobhans Story

Posted 25th October

Hi, I’m Siobhan, I am 20 years old and I am from Screen Education Edinburgh.

I became a part of the FANS Youth Team as a replacement for another representative from Screen Education Edinburgh that dropped out due to unforeseen circumstances, a few weeks before the first meeting of the team. As it was kind of last minute, I didn’t have a lot of information about what was going to happen. I knew that it was 1 or 2 young people, from the different FANS organisations coming together to work on a film festival. I had no idea how intense the work would be or what the other young people where going to be like.

At the first residential, I was really nervous meeting this group of people since I was going to be working with them for a long time and it was important that we came together as a team. I was really interested in finding out about the other FANS organisations as I had heard of all of them but didn’t know anything about what they did or what kind of ethos and views they had. I think that after the first day of introductions, some intense games of stacks and the beginning of the planning process, it was clear that we had similar ideas and were all very committed to making this a success.

Having already taken part in creating a film festival albeit on a much smaller scale, I already knew how to judge films subjectively and had previous experience marketing a film festival but was keen to learn about networking properly and liasing with the special guests we would have to come and host workshops/talks. I already feel like I have learned so much from this experience but I am constantly picking up new techniques, discovering a new interest within the industry and meeting amazing new people.

I am currently undecided in which area of the industry I want to go into but I hope to attend university next year to study film further and I am keen to figure out where my strengths are and learn more about the areas I can improve on. So far, I have taken part in the making of 17 short films, 3 music videos and 2 adverts in various roles from sound to camera to editing to acting to writing and directing.

I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity I have been given to be a part of such a brilliant team and create something that is hopefully going to inspire and encourage people to get involved in the industry and to just make something that could potentially inspire someone else.
